7 Signs That It’s Time to Replace Your Windows

Even the highest quality windows don’t last forever. Over time, their performance degrades, leading to a less comfortable home and higher energy bills. If you’re unsure whether your windows are past their prime, here are the seven key signs that it’s time for a replacement.

1. You Can See Obvious Damage

This is the most straightforward sign. Look for cracks or chips in the glass, warped frames that no longer sit flush, or rot in wooden sills. Old uPVC frames can also become brittle and discoloured, indicating they have lost their structural integrity.

2. Your Energy Bills Are Creeping Up

If your heating costs are rising with no other explanation, your windows are a likely culprit. Feel for cold spots or draughts when you stand near them on a chilly day. This shows that heat is escaping, forcing your heating system to work harder and costing you money.

3. They’re Difficult to Open, Close, or Lock

A window that sticks, jams, or won’t lock properly is more than just an annoyance. It’s a significant security risk that can make your home vulnerable to intruders. It also poses a safety hazard, as windows can be a vital escape route in an emergency.

4. There’s Condensation Between the Panes

While a little condensation on the inside of a window can be normal, condensation between the panes of double or triple glazing is a major red flag. This misting effect means the airtight seal has failed, allowing the insulating gas to escape. Your window is no longer energy-efficient.

5. Your Home is Getting Noisier

Modern windows are designed to dampen outside noise. If you’re noticing more sound from traffic, neighbours, or the weather when your windows are closed, it’s a clear indicator that their seals and insulating properties are failing.

6. You’ve Found Leaks or Water Stains

Windows are there to keep the elements out, not let them in. Any sign of water seeping through the frame or pooling on the windowsill means it’s time for immediate action. Leaks can lead to mould growth and significant damage to your walls.

7. Your Furniture or Carpets Are Fading

If you notice that carpets, curtains, or furniture near your windows are becoming faded, it means harmful UV rays are getting through. The protective low-emissivity (Low-E) coating on the glass has likely degraded, a problem that modern, energy-efficient replacement windows will solve.
